Installing Closet Swinging Doors (Remove drywall + steel corners) ?

Iím currently planning to install swinging doors for 3 closets in our house. I would need your help and expertise because I have one challenge to overcome. During the construction of our house we asked the contractor not to install closet doors. The closet door openings have been drywalled (and steel corners have been installed).

To install the swinging doors I will need to remove the drywall (in the opening) to nail the doors jambs into the side studs (jack studs) and top header.

That being said, if I remove the drywall in the door opening I will also need to remove the steel corners. That will be in nasty job. I was wondering if installing the door jambs against the drywall opening would be a bad idea. I want a quality job but I donít want to waste time and money by removing the drywall and steel corners for nothing.

What would be the best solution?

Thanks !

Nasty or not it needs to be done.
Not much to it, just tapping the nailing flange on the corner will shatter the drywall compound and not hurt the drywall on the wall, then just pry off the corner.
Sure the rough opening was build to fit a prehung door?
It needs to be 2" wider then the door size.

Thanks Joe for your help.

That's what I thought. I want to do the job properly but I still wanted to make sure it was really necessary.

The rough opening was made to accommodate two 24" doors (48")

Thanks again

removing the corner bead is easy, it should be done because when you go to hang the doors you will lose 1/2" of bite from teh nail because drywall provies zero holding power.. plus theres a good chance that the rough opening will be 1" too small to accept a regular sized door
