Installing A Back Splash

hi,

i would like to install a backsplash above the kitchen sink and countertop. it looks like regular sheetrock is there now, painted with some sort of epoxy base paint, maybe? can i just glue and grout ceramic tiles to this? or do i need to rip out the sheetrock and put in that grey cement mesh type board (cant think of the name) first?

If you rough up the surphace and then prime it you be ready, set, go.
