How to stain a staircase railing

Hello all,

We are having our oak hardwoods stained a darker brown, however the staircase railing is still natural color and has a semi gloss applied to it. Any suggestions on how to match the staircase railing, that doesn't involve hours of hand sanding?

thanks in advance.

No easy magic way to do it.
All the old sealer has to go. Need bare wood so the stain can soak in.

I have done refinishing on furniture and any type of wood pieces you can imagine. There is a "magic bullet"... The first step is to remove the existing varnish/clear coat. you can employ a chemical... However, for stair railings, i would much rather use a sponge sander and take my time. Yes, this gets to be labor intensive and it is for this reason refinishers charge so much!

As to the staining, if you are going from a lighter color to a darket color, you do no need to sand the lighter color to bare wood. However, you have to give a very good scuff. I would start with an 80 grit sand paper and finish with a 180. Since youre scuffing, no need to obtain a bare wood status.

You can scuff the surface with a Scotch Bright pad and then wipe it down with a tack cloth. Then I would check out a product called Polyshades. It's a stain/poly all in one.
I have had success using it over previously polyurethaned wood.
