how snug should a custom window fit

I just had custom windows replaced in my home. During the installation I noticed that there was a gap inbetween the top of the window and the top of the opening. How much room should there be?

I was told that the windows are measured to the 1/8th of an inch and that would make me believe that there shouuld fit real snub not so that the gap is obvious visable.

the installers told me that was standard and they insulate the space and cap it off and caulk it shut.

I am presuming that will work but it dosen't seem right to me that there was a obvious gap. Am I correct in my assumption.? and how much gap should there really be on custom fit windows.

Thanks for your help.

Thats' the way it's done my friend. There is no way windows could be ordered to fit any differently on replacement windows. If the adjacent areas are painted don't let them use 100% silicone to caulk the cracks. They should use a paintable caulk and 100% silicone IS NOT PAINTABLE.

Replacement windows can be be sized to fit very closely on the sides, 1/8-1/4" is normal. But the window has to be tilted in, so the top needs some extra clearance room. Vinyl windows come with a head expander that fills that gap. The air gaps should be filled with non-expanding foam or insualtion. I use DAP foam, never really hardens, moves with the window.

Yup, 1/8 - 1/4 gap is normal
Too tight & you can run into problems with wood swelling w/humidty.
Then the windows either don't open or they stick
