How to remove and install stair spindles

I have attached a picture of wooden spindles that I have in my home. I have never tackled this before. How do I go about removing them? I am wanting to replace them with wrought iron spindles. "Typically" how are those installed(attached)?

Remove top rail, they can be just sitting in counter bored holes with dowels on the spindles or they may be screwed in with dowel screws.

Typically they are doweled at the bottom and tack at the top. There could be spacers that have been nail in between the hold them.
Removal without damage could mean removing the hand rail.

They are typically glued too so this could be a chore.Check for nails or screws at the top first.

Start at the top of the stairs and remove the filet in the bottom side of the hand rail. Most times the spindle can be removed by hitting it at the top, be careful not to knock the lip off the bottom of the rail where the filet was removed. Some people just tack the top of the spindle and not glue if so it will be easy to remove the spindles.

To install the metal spindles you will need to install a continuous filet under the entire rail, then just install the metal spindles.
