How to rebuild a porch with a roof?
This porch has a roof over it all the way around it also has an area that sticks out of the corner that isn't a gazebo but looks similar to one that is also apart of the porch.
What are risers?
What are over hangs?
What are hangs?
I hear joists have to be 16 inches apart; how big do the joists have to be?
The columns on the original are about 6-8 inches in diameter the height is about 7-8 feet also.
My dad has sawed out the old pieces that were literally falling in (it looked like some one dropped a huge bowling ball in the deck and it caved in before he even sawed it apart).
We are trying to figure out if home depot or some place will teach us how to rebuild a porch.
1) how do we remove the old porch without the roof falling over
2) how do we get the joists in; do we have to nail them to the house or how is it they are put on the deck?
3) I assume from the way the old porch looked it the walking part was hanging onto the house itself does this sound right?
There were also bricks in between the columns sandwhiching and holding the porch up.
It would be alot easier to try and get a video of the porch and show it to you.
Let me know if any of you are up for giving us tips on how to fix it; thanks!
p.s. this house is very very old!
you need to read more on basic framing to get a better understanding of this process. Then come back and ask some more specific questions. Their are many sites available that have documents and videos to show you what you are looking for.
Just prop the roof up with some 2x4s to hold it up while you take out the posts. Run the 2x4s from the roof to the ground . And pound a stake in the ground nexted to the 2x4 and nail it together. I just did a project like this last year on my deck my house is very old also. I just finished roofing my front porch project.
