how to nail on a Chair Rail

I'm ready to have a chair rail installed in a guest room.

I have finishing nails. I have the chair rail.

Do I have to hunt for studs in the wall. How close should the nails be? also for a chair rail that's 3" deep.........when I nail, do I put 2 nails, one on top of the other, near the top and bottom edge to reduce any gaps?

After it's nailed on I'll determine if caulking is needed.

Is this a good plan?

Yes--find the studs

Yes--two nails---top and bottom

Yes--caulk if it's to be painted--

A plunger type nails set might be worth the money if you are having trouble with the nail set slipping off the head of the nail--

Use a stud finder to find the studs. Once you find one the others should be about 16" apart.
Just trying to nail into the drywall will never hold.
Fill the nail holes with Painters puddy or Fast and Final spackle, not caulking.
Before install the rail make sure to look all the way around the room to make sure it's not going to be in the way of any outlets, switches, ECT.
I like to preprime and paint before installing and just have to do some light touch up painting once it's installed.

yes, the room had the final coat of paint and blue tape was used to define the 2 colors on the wall, and where the chair rail goes.

I used to counter sink nails and rub a little stick that looked like a crayon over them then paint. That was years ago. I'll try to find Painters Puddy.

thanks

best and strongest way to put up chair. measure up the height that the chair will be and make a mark in all 4 corners of room, measure to the underside of the chair and snap a chalk line( be careful not to spill chalk on carpet). after lines are established, find the wall studs. I always mark studs by putting a tiny pencil mark right below the chalk line that was snapped. next, cut your chair for each wall and test fit the chair on the wall to determine accuracy. Then use liquid nails type glue and smear some on the wall behind the chair. install chair with finish nails and the glue will help to float through wall inaccuracies( dips, humps). after nailed up putty nail holes and calk underside of chair and top side of chair. the underside not so important but may be viewed while laying down in bed. Good luck
