how much waste when angling wood ? ? ?

starting the bsmt exercise room & we'll install cedar/redwood 1x8s at 30deg angle up to chair rail height then finish w/drywall & paper/paint,,, did this yrs ago but forgot the waste factor - seems like 30% - that sound right ?

the alternative's buying enough for 3 walls, measuring the waste, & buying the rest needed which, as a diy-er, will probably happen no matter what

thanks in adv, guys !

There should be almost no waste. Whatever you cut off for the previous row would then start the next row with the same angle. The only waste should be the last board. Same as when you install hardwood flooring.

If you want all continuous boards then you'd have some waste but I can't imagine 30%. Espeically if you purchase board lengths where you only cut off a few inches of the end of the board when you get your last piece out of it.

only coming up to chair rail height, eg using an 8' board,,, middle cut'd be usable but both end cuts will waste 12",,, be better off using 10s, wouldn't we ???

anyway, that's only 20% waste + a large plant in ea corner to cover the holidays

I built a 13x18 room addition to house a Jucuzzi several years ago with T&G cedar angled on all the walls. My father, a carpenter all his life, recommended I figure for 10% waste. Came out just about right. Nice thing was that if you cut a piece wrong, just tossed it aside to use later when a shorter piece was needed.
