How much opening space lost to attic ladder?

I am considering buying a Werner televator attic ladder to put into a rough opening of 24 by 30.

Does anyone know roughly how much room the ladder takes up when it is down? For instance, would this sized hole end up being about 24 by 24 with the ladder in place?

I am trying to figure out what I'll still be able to get up through the hole.

With a 24" opening, you only end up with about 22" between the outside frame of the ladder. It gets small real quick.

I think it takes about six inches. It's hard to get anything much larger than a computer up through the opening.

A typical attic ladder frame (if 3/4" lumber) works out to these measurements in width.

This is an atypical ladder. There is no frame, just the lumber, and the ladder bolts to the lumber -- it attaches to a single "header" piece. I just measured. My opening is 29.5" With the ladder in the down position, there is 21" of clearance from the front of the ladder rail to the edge of the opening.

Looks like something I might get. But does the ladder affect insulation in the attic and the access hatch itself?

I have a 3/4 inch piece of pink foam glued to the attic side of the hatch.

The ladder goes up and then "flops" over. when it's up it's only about a foot tall, and it's hinged a bit higher than the top of the joist, so if you had insulation right there it might compress it a little. Since the ladder only occupies a little area, I have a piece of cardboard that covers the opening from the top side. Doing that makes an air space. I think I might make a better attic side hatch some day.
