Why not just scuff the finish and paint it?

It's not hard to remove the trim...just expensive to replace it. My old house is filled with trim that was originally stained. Since that time it has been covered with numerous coats of solid paint. In a few instances, I stripped it down to the original finish, scuffed it up good and then primed it with KILZ. Then another light sanding, and finished with quality semi gloss.

It came out very good in my opinion.

Has anyone ever used a product at Sherwin Williams that can be painted over any surface such as stained wood- it will act as a primer but no sanding has to be done on the wood...

I gotta tell ya...this is the first time I have ever heard of anyone wanting to replace window trim simply because it is stained and they want it painted. Seems a little ridiculous to me. If the trim is stained then it is very likely it also has a clear coat of (something) over it and would easily be paintable. The fact that it was previously stained means absolutely nothing.

Someone please explain to me the sanity of doing such a thing. I'm all ears. Maybe I'm missing something.

That is a completely different question than the one originally asked. Removing the trim is actually pretty easy, just go slow and careful. Be prepared though...... mill work is expensive.
