Question

How to frame 12" Gable Over hang for 10'x10' Shed?

Hi folks,

I've posted a few times in the last couple of weeks. I'm a beginner building a basic 10'x10' shed. I just stood up my walls over the weekend, added sheathing and house wrap.

Now, I'm ready to get started on the roof. I'm planning on stick building a 4/12 pitch gable roof using rafters. I would like to have a 1' over hang for my eaves, which I think I know how to do. I'm also debating about having a 1' overhang for the gable ends. Which, finally, leads me to my question...How do I frame the overhang? I've seen a few options online, drop trusses, or ladder build the overhang and nail that to a rafter. I'm not really sure what's appropriate for a small building like this and with rafter roof. Any advice on how to frame it and if it's really worth it is appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Matt

On a shed I would just add a 2x4 or 2x6 outside the gable end and let that be my overhang. could even do a 2x4 with 2x6 over it for 3" of overhang.

If you want 1' then the tack on ladders are easy. You can also build the gable end shorter and then tie back to the last full rafter.

we typically use the ladder frame for extended rakes in my area. typically they are screwed (2 -#10x3" wood screws) into each gable end wall stud

For the 1' Ladder case, do you end the ridge board flush with the last rafter? Then have my outside 2x6's sit against each other?

For the case with a shorter gable end, does the ridge board get extended out the 1 foot?

I'm not keeping up here. So, when you say gable end wall stud, do you mean the rafters? I'm not visualizing how they would hit vertical studs?

Also, in general, for the extension is the sheathing sandwiched in between the extension and the gable end?

So if I screwed the ladder overhang to those, wouldn't the overhang be below the other rafters? What am I missing here?

The picture perfectly clears up the case with the shorter gable end wall. Thanks!

Ok. I understand that. BUt wouldn't that just let you nail into the end rafter itself? How would I screw into the studs? Won't I be above them?

Thanks for all the help by the way!

the studs are notched so that the outside rafter sits in the notched studs. you screw the ladder frame through the outside rafter and into the studs

So, I'll take one more shot at understanding this. I'm not there, yet.

How does the last common rafter sit on the vertical wall studs? I keep failing to see how the common rafter can sit on top of the studs and have the studs notched for the ladder frame. If you can try to explain to me how those three pieces fit together, ladder frame, gable end wall stud, and end common rafter I'm hoping I'll understand what your describing.

try this ....

we typically use structural wood screws such as Simpson Strong-Tie SDS24512, or similar to attach the ladder frame to the gable end wall studs
