How to finish a wood bar top so it won't get drink ring stains?

Hey guys,

I hope this is in the right section: I want to finish a bar that I ordered on the top where you put drinks so I don't have to play drink holder/coaster police to guests. I didn't get any options when I ordered it because it comes prebuilt and I have to assemble it, its not custom.

Options on custom bars include laminate tops, how would I do that on this bar? I don't know what kind of wood it is, it just says hardwood.. so maybe its wood composite, not sure. I'm definitely a novice so the easiest option is probably the best.

Thanks for your ideas!

If it has a factory finish, it may already be a good one. But polyurethane gives good protection against most liguids , if done with multiple coats.

poly would probably be your best bet. It probably will have a factory finish of some sort...probably a lacquer finish. But see how it is first.

do you actually want to laminate the top?? that could be done rather easily.....If yoy are just looking for a finish....I believe you can get some sort of resin finish that will give you that bar top finish. Poly probably wont work all that great with wet drinks sitting on it. Try goggling bar top finishes

They sell a bar top finish at lowes thats a two part epoxy type, its really durable, i used it on a small version of a dining room table for the kids to eat at, very durable, and nothing they have spilled on it and left there has been an issue getting up and havent had any problems, it sets up very quick so have a squigy ready and move quickly, also dont mix up too much it will set up on you quick, good luck

Thanks for the info! So I got this bar finally and the top part looks kind of orange. How would you paint it darker? It is some kind of powder coat glossy texture hand painted bar with the top being a solid wood composite with a veneer over the composite wood.
