How do you install lap siding?

I am installing lap siding on my home. When installing the bottom piece(just above my front porch), do you install some sort of starer strip to push the bottom of the first lap out to the proper angle? If so, typically, what is general width needed to make this angle happen? What kind of wood is usually used for this? Attached is a picture to help know what I am talking about. Thanks!

same material as siding, you rip the siding at same location your exposure line is

Sorry to be clear, you put the strip at the same width up from the bottom as the nail line? Assuming that is what you meant?

did you put the siding against the concrete?

One way to do it is to strap the concrete out with pressure treated 2"x2" and then attach the siding to that
