How do you cut crown molding?

I've googled this for a couple of days now and I just can't seem to find what I need. I need to cut both inside and outside corners. The guy at the mill shop just told me to lay it flat and cut it at 22.5 degree angles. Is this correct? Thanks.

I bought one of these at Lowes in the tool area. Super simple to use and makes perfect cuts everytime.
If you can read a picture you can do it.

I use a jig very similar to the one Joe linked for you.... only mine is clear, orange plastic. It's brittle, and has broken on me. I do not suggest the particular one I have.

So this just attaches to your miter saw? I'm assuming you put the crown in upside down or? Do the pictures on it tell you exactly how to do it? Thanks again.

It does not attach, it just sits on the table.
And yes it's still cut upside down.

to get the correct angle for the crown to nest in the saw you have to check the "lay" of the crown with a framing square.

another thing to consider is if you are using modern crown or traditional..
modern sits at a 45 degree angel between the wall and ceiling.. whereas traditional is 52 degrees.. more of the material is down on the wall

Many of the compound sliding miter saws manufacturers have angle settings for flat cutting various angles. Bosch? DeWalt? I do recall finding clear insrtuctions one time when I had many odd angles to contend with. It worked perfect every time.

if you are cutting it flat the angles on most miter saws are for 52-38 degree crown. there are tables you can find online that will give you the correct miter and bevel angles for the angle of your particular crown. the stuf we were getting in western ny was 47-43. once you get the correct miter and bevel settings its very easy to cut and very easy to make minor adjustments to get a really good fit. this link gives you the settings for crown with different spring angles.
