How do I repair a Landing Newel?

I have to install a baby gate at the top of the stairs. All the gates I've seen says I need to hardware mount. I'll have to drill into my wooden landing banister post at the top of the stairs. Eventually our baby will out grow the gate and we won't need it. At that time, how do I fill in the hole that is left by the screw?

Even if I use wood filler/putty how do I get the same finish? I fear it'll never be the same....

Please advise. Thanks.

By the time you need to fill the holes, the post will probably need refinishing anyway so just plug with a dowel, sand and refinish. JMHO

Plug the hole with a screw so it can be removed for the next baby and gate. Enjoy the baby and don't worry about all that other stuff.

How do I repair a Landing Newel?

I've installed a couple using a 1x3 and hose clamps---so no permanent damage was done--

Got a picture of where it needs to go?
Any way to mount it to the wall?

Didn't think of that, zip ties would work like that also.
