Im a new homeowner and not the best carpenter, I hope you guys can help. My home front has a trim piece that measures about 1.5x8.75 approx 2 feet from the ground. Alot of it is in bad shape and I wanted to replace it before I paint it. Im not sure what lumber to buy? I thought a 2x10 measured out to 9.25"?? Am I incorrect or is this different? Im not clear what wood to use on the external of a home either? PT? or Douglas Fir, are my only choices without special ordering (as far as I know in Central Cal) in a 2x10. Also, what kind of caulking should be used on outside of house, Ive got a bunch of sikoflex is it ok? Thankyou for any help!
Is this applied directly over your siding?
Also, 8+" isn't a standard width of lumber, so replace in kind, you will need to rip down a 2x10.
Or consider this. Instead of 2x material, which creates a nice ledger for moisture and dirt to cause rot, just use 1x8 Azek. It will be thinner and not as thick, and were it mine, I would bevel the top edge to facilitate drainage.
Applying directly onto the siding isn't a great idea any way you slice it, as moisture will be trapped between the board and siding, promoting rot.
