I am putting 3 18" windows in my house between the studs. I may have to sand down the studs slightly to make the windows fit. I am wondering if that is a problem. Also, There is no window where I am putting them. I will be cutting out the wall in the area where I need to install the windows. Is there anything that I should be aware of before I start cutting holes in my exterior walls? Do I need to put any kind of water barrier or anything? Do I need a header or anything like that?
If you are installing windows that are 18" exact in width, or requiring 18" for a rough opening, you are going to be involved with doing alot more work than simply sanding down some studs.
Actual bay area spacing beteen standard 16" OC 2x framing is 14-1/2".
They would involve alot of re-framing, and installing structural headers (18" windows reguire 20" RO's, that would put your overheard weight loaded joists or rafters off the center of wall studs) also, exterior re-working, and interior re-working.
If you have ordered the window, get some experienced help on this. If you are new at this, it's several notches above a standard DIY type project.
It involves your safety.
