Help with an old mortise handleset.

We have an old Mortise handleset on our front door. One with a handle and thumb-press on the outside and a door know on the inside. The problem is that the inside doorknob completely pulls out of the door if you pull on it. The knob itself pulls out as well as the stick part that goes into the door. The stick part consists of two long metal piece with knobs on the end. I think this is what is supposed to keep it in the mechanism but it doesn't anymore. Does anyone have any ideas of fixing or replacing just the knob portion?

Check to see if there are marks on the shaft where a set screw was applied. If so then it should give you the location of where the set screw is and you can tighten it. If there are no signs of a set screw then ther may be a clip that has come off. If you could post some pictures it might help to see what you are working with.

Loose, head stripped out, or stripped threads on the handles in the most common problums.
You going to need an allen wrench to fix it most times.

If you don't need/want to keep the look, I have had good luck cleaning the old mortise up with a router and putting a solid wood plug in. Then redrill for a more modern lockset.

There should be a two piece spindle. One side has a bent over hook on the end. Held together there are threads on the outside to accept a knob. These parts are available. There is a square hub in the lockset that accepts this split spindle. If the hub has it's square center worn away, a replacement spindle may not stay in place. If you get new spindle and knob, slide the half of the spindle with a bent end in the hub first and hook it. Then slide the other half into the hub beside the first. Then thread the knob onto the spindle and until it rests in the escutcheon.

@Maintenance_6: It looks like that is exactly what I have going on based on the pictures I took. Do you know where I can get a replacement two piece spindle?

You could try a local locksmith shop. Should be a stock item for an established shop.

Your picture shows a scissors type spindle, but a split spindle will work in the mortise set you have. In fact, it will work better in a worn hub than a scissors type.
