I just started to put up some shelves and already purchased toggle bolts expecting to anchor to hollow wall. I ended up being able to space out everything to the studs (good right?). But, my studs are metal ()) ... Will these anchors still work? As long as I can drill a 1/2" hole into the metal studs, right? will this weaken the studs? I am putting up a full wall of shelving. What is between metal studs? will these hollow wall anchors work? be strong enough? Thanks to all in advance...
There's nothing between the studs as a rule unless you put it there.
Will it be strong enough? Depends on what you're putting on the shelves.
To take the guess work out of it, why not put free standing wall units up?
If you really want the wall mounted shelves, you might need to open the walls and install blocking.
Again, it depends on the weight the shelves will carry.
Iagree with ron on the blocking, we generally cut out a square in our walls and install either 2x6 or rip 3/4 plywood and put between the metal studs, reinstall sheet rock and mud in for fire rating and hang what ever we are putting up.
