header plate


Hi there im new here so hello everyone , my question is am i aloud to put a 2x6 plate on my header before i install it. so the 2x6 plate is acually sitting on the cripple. I dont know if that is to code or not?

If you're talking about laying a flat 2x6 flat on top of the trimmers and then your double 2x header on top of the plate....

I doubt anyone will find anything illegal about doing it. It is an unnecessary waste of lumber however, unless some unusual circumstance warrants it.

Standard practice here when using double 2x's, or a 4x for a header-flush out, foam board inside later (when window is not dropped). Gives a nailing surface for drywall and window head trim (casing), unless thicker trim.
