Hanging Kitchen Cabinets from soffit...no backwall

I need help hanging kitchen upper cabinets to a soffit with no back wall. There are 2 end cabinets that I can support in studs on side walls. Do I just hit studs in the soffit thru the top of the cabinets?

Thanks for your help!

You should post some pictures if you can. You're soffet is the overhang outside your house. You I think are talking about your ceiling rafters. Include pictures of the tops of your cabinets.

how much of an opening are you going to span with the cabinets????.
if you talking 4' it is very important that they be secured to a sidewall or other cabinets on its side. and I would give the cabinet more strength by Installing a 3/4" piece of plywood on top of the cabinet where the sides and the front stick beyond the top. screw from the sides into the 3/4 to give the cabinet some extra support so you can run some screws up into the soffit framing.
the cabinets on the sides will help keep the cabinets plumb. good luck bob.

I think what you are referring to is a "Kitchen Soffit" , hangs down about 12"?
If so , Yes you need to hit the framing in the soffit. They should have been framed to hold the cabinets without problem.

The problem with attempting to attach the cabinet to the soffit is that most cabinets are not made to be attached through the top. There is usually a ledger or support board across the back of most cabinets so you have the full support of the frame against the wall. Most cabinet tops are recessed from the frame. If you attempt to screw the top upwards, you do not have full support. Make sense?

Take a look at Angus242's pictures. Fill in the cavity on top, using wood glue around the edges. If necessary, do a little sanding around the inside edges of the cabinet so you get good wood to wood contact for better glueing strength. When anchoring into 2 x 4's in the soffit, use round head screws and a washer with each screw to help distribute the weight, don't use screws that will bore into the wood for a flush mount, and make sure to keep screws as close to the sides as possible.

Your cabinets will stay for a good long time, but don't overload them.

Another idea that just hit me, use a couple "L" brackets attached to the inside side walls of the cabinet, and run your screw up through them into the soffit.

Edit: It's also a good idea to run at least four screws, minimum, per cabinet, and try to run them all at slight angles, each angling in different directions.

Amen Jeeper! Glad to see someone thinks it is possible besides me.
I have done both the added plywood to the top and have used the L-brackets also.
