Hanging an aluminum awning

I should say re hanging an awning. The present awning is 4 foot wide 3 foot out from the front door. It has the side wings for support. It is lagged on with 3 inch lag bolts. So here is where things get strange, I can not grab a stud for the life of me. The awning is sitting about 14 inches above the top of the door, so it is above the door header. I tried everything and can not find a stud. The house is an old inner city Detroit house. It is aluminum siding over this clay like siding over lapboard sheeting. Then lath and plaster on the inside wall. Will a stud sensor find a stud? I am familiar with house framing just can not find a stud and do not understand what the deal is?

It will inside and then you can transfer the stud location to the out side.

Perhaps use a drywall toggle bolt with washers if you can't find the stud?
