Hang door thats too big for opening on outside of door?

I know this may seem like an odd request, but is there a nice way to hang a door without putting it in the doorway?

Reason is I have a pantry with a very narrow opening, previously there was a prehung door. Now my I have two options as I see it,

1- I was gonna put a cabinet face with doors on the pantry
2- I found a nice glass pantry door I liked, but its wider the the doorway.

So I would like to go with option 2 but not sure where to start. I would like to build a frame similar to how a cabinet door hangs and put it there. What do you think? Any thoughts to how to accomplish this without it looking like crap?

How much wider is the door than the door way? If it is only a few inchs i would build a frame around the existing doorway but with the dimensions to fit the new door.this would stick out into your living space a little bit but if cased in correctly should look nice. The frame around the door should hide exposed walls that are smaller than the door

This is a standard interior door of 1 3/8" thick? If it is you will need to make the frame at least 1 1/2" thick to hang the door. You also need to secure this frame to the wall to carry the weight of the door. If this is one of those all glass doors with the word "Pantry" on it, it will be pretty heavy.
You could use 2x3's to frame the opening and 2 1/2" trim to hide the roughness of the material.
Any reason you don't just open the wall and frame the opening the old fashioned way?
It would look better.

The doorway is odd shaped. Its only like 20 inches or something. There was a hung door before but it made it difficult to use pantry so I planned on putting a cabinet face on it but than I found this door. And yes its one of those glass ones that say pantry
