handrail - 9 steps up


cana i run a handrail at top and instead of 4 inch picket spacing run rails horizontail in between top rail and steps and if so what is spacing for regulations halifax nova scotia

handrail - 9 steps up


I doubt if that will be allowed---horizontal rails can be climbed and are generally not allowed.

Stair rails spacing must be less than 4"--

Go to your local code enforcement site--stair rail specs should be available there.

handrail - 9 steps up


BC building code states no horizontal rails where you could get a toe in the space and use it to climb. Not sure what Nova Scotia code is.
Only place I know of where horizontal rails are allowed is California.

I thought horizontal balisters could cause cancer so why are they allowed in CA?

Not legally by code ... doesn't mean I don't know contractors or homeowners who install them regardless.
