hand rails


how can i lenghten a wood hand rail and make it strong and safe for a retirement home?

Need a rail stretcher.
Come on where going to know a whole lot more and see some pictures.
What style rail, inside, outside, what's it made of?

If you can find some of the same profile you can spline a section of any length in to make it as long as necessary. Otherwise you'll need to make your own, copying the shape you have and adding it.

Attached is an example how I repaired a broken rocker of a child's chair making the rocker longer. You can either cut a tenon on the end of the new length as in this chair repair or cut the original rail and add a floating spline on both ends of the new section.

If it's a standard wood hand rail you use a rail bolt.

I believe Fairview's method would be stronger than a rail bolt.
