I tried a Zircon and it wouldn't even detect studs under 60's-era sheet rock, nor under plaster. That eliminates its use in about 80% of homes around here. I was hoping this thread might lead to a more reliable brand.

Yeah, I noticed in one part of my room where the years of paint layers built up it was harder to detect. That being said, this was the best stud finder I could find around here short of ordering one online. I really didn't want to spend more cash anyway, plus for what I need it for it's been working. If I couldn't get a solid reading on one part of the wall, usually it would read it fine above or below the same area, and I would just connect my marks with my tSquare and some chalk.

I am not sure which model I have but I have used it on houses like my Dads which was built in the late 50's and right up to my newer house and it has worked real good. The only time it has trouble is when I try to detect roof rafters which has stipple on it. I have to go really slow and try a couple of places where maybe the stipple is a little less raised but even then I have found the rafters.

I was having the problem where it would light up and beep as I passed a point on the wall, then I would go past the stud center and back up a little and it wouldn't beep. I could move slowly across the wall for 48 inches with no beeps and then have two beeps in 10 inches. It was like the thing just liked to beep at random intervals that had nothing to do with what was in the wall.
