Garage Framing
Hi everyone - newbie to the site, hoping someone can help.

My garage is about 24' square, 2x6 rafters and 2x6 ceiling joists. The roof is a 3:12 or 4:12. I want to drywall and insulate my ceiling but the ceiling joists appear to sag a little without any weight - I'm nervous to hang rock and insulation from them as is. There are very few supports (king studs??) to the peak now, maybe 3-4 total.

I have a friend who suggested making a "truss" out of them. Our thought is to jack them straight and frame in 2x4 supports.

Would this work? How do I know where/how much/what shape??

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!! Great site! Thanks.

Ayuh,..... That's what I'd do....

The good old "W" shape of framing is pretty hard to beat for strength,....
I'd do every other 1 myself.....

I don't know what you mean by ,"king studs",as they are found around doors and windows, not roof framing members.
You could install a series of rafter ties below the ridge beam and tie the roof rafters together. Then tie in the ceiling joists to the rafter ties with vertical 1x6's

Thanks Ron. I didn't think they were called King Studs (for the reason's you referenced) but someone called them that so I wasn't sure....

I believe your suggestion is what's there now. 2x4's running horizontally, parallel with the peak, with 1x6's up to the peak on about every 3rd or 4th rafter.

Is this sufficient to hang drywall and insulate? I can take a picture if that would help???

strongbacks :} those 2 x 4 should NOT be on the flat but on edge. They are to stiffen the joists.

Pic attached - from what has been said I may be OK by putting 2x4's on edge and tying to the peak.

BTW - the two 1x4's shown are the only 2 up to the peak. Not really sure why there are only 2 and they are on the far half of the garage, but....I guess that's why I'm trying to fix a sagging ceiling! LOL!

yes those 1 x 4 are doing nothing :] run strong backs mid span on each side, since you have room use 2 x 6 CROWN THEM UP!!!!!!!!!! get lengths long enuf to bypass each other and then screw em together also.
