Garage Framing

Looking for some advice framing a 3 car garage. The garage door wall plans shows one contious header going across all 3 door openings. If I used 3 individual headers (one for each opening) would that change the integrity of the wall? Would the inspector fail me? Thanks.

You CAN'T change the plans structurally. You WILL fail inspections. You have to ask the architect who drew them. He/she can only make the changes...not you.

exactly.

also it creates 2 joints between headers which can act as a mild hinge point . in turn it becomes harder to keep the wall straight. having one contious header will be much larger and stronger plus it will allow for a straight wall

Holey cr@p! You have about a 24' header spec'ed out for your garage doors?
What is it? A 11-1/4" x 18" glulam?

Andy.

Andy...three garage doors will have two breaks between them. Using block where I'm from there will be to short block walls on each side if the middle door. Therefore you don't need a big header whether you use three separate headers or one continues header.

The shear walls may be as important as the header ties: http://ohiobuildingcodeconsultants.c...cingdetail.pdf

Did you call and ask the Inspector if you needed a S.E. for the change or not?

Why are you wanting to change something that you paid money for to design these plans? Cost cutting?
What does the plan show to use there? Is the garage door wall also a gable end. He may be thinking about point loads for the ridge.
