Gap between wall and moulding 1/4 ???

I have installed this wainscoting. And it has turned out pretty nice. I have a question regarding the space from the molding and the wall. The top sill and the wall have a gap of under a 1/4” to the widest point of ½” then back to a ¼”

I like the “Block look” just wondering what the professional way to address this gap would be?

The reason it bows out, is the tile was removed from here, so they had a thick mud bed. YOU CAN SEE THE SPACE WHERE THE COLOR SAMPLES ARE

My thoughts, backfill with mud, (sheetrock compound), find a molding cap, (again I like the block look or cut a piece of wood and apply it to the back (which is the same as mudding it) Any other thoughts?

Thanks again!

Why "mud" it if you are just going to add another molding?

I would shim behind the 1X to get a consistant distance from the wall throughout then add another piece (1X2 maybe) as a cap to maintain the square/block look.

Could add cove molding or 1/4" round shot to the wall.

Thanks Bud, I didn't plan on mudding, that's the easyiest way. but not sure it would look good. The 1x4 at the top is kinda smoothed down on the corners. Thinking a cap molding is going to be the best!
Thanks

A cap of suitable size (1X2) to cover the void and overhang on the front would probably work but if the existing top-piece isn't consistent with the wall the variances will show if it isn't first shimmed to consistency.

What do mean when you say "cap". Maybe we aren't both watching the same game.

a small cove, 1/4 round or a chair rail style panel molding are pretty much a starndard practice to install on something like that. it will clean it up and you wont have a gap
