Framing for patio door - permit requirements
I want to replace a couple of windows with patio doors in my single family home in Florida. I spoke to the buildings department, and they require a permit for the framing of the wall for the new patio door openings. Part of the process involves submitting drawings, which must include a great deal of details on how the headers will be secured to the jack studs, the studs to the floor slab and roof plates (hurricane straps), etc.

My question is; does anyone know of a good source for templates to come up with these engineering drawings? Perhaps some samples that reside on the web? Any ideas short of hiring an engineer? (I plan to design it in a way that, if anything, would be considered overkill for strength)

Try your library. They may have a book on framing you can photocopy header construction. Many good local lumber companies have fabricated lumber suppliers that have engineering software they use to calculate beams, joists, and headers, usually for free. Any given header will do the same work regardless of who does the proper calculations. If it complies with code they can't make you overbuild it.
