Hi,

I'm going to be framing in a new L shaped stair to access my basement from my first floor. The attached sketch shows my stair layout (black lines), existing floor joists (blue lines), and proposed new joists and load bearing wall (red lines). Am I on the right path with what I'm proposing?

Looks ok to me, framing-wise. You'll of course need to dig out the slab and pour a footing for the load bearing wall. The footing's size will be determined by local requirements, soil conditions, imposed load, etc. You'll definately need an engineer's guidance to size that footing for you.

Looks ok, but a bit more complicated than need be IMO. I would go with a Lolly or lally columns, http://www.octoberhome.com/articles/adjustcolumn/adjustcolumn.html as posts and beams. Walls would not be bearing. You will need to dig footings for the columns, but not as extensive as what you are proposing. Still as posted, Permits and some thing in Red ink (Engineered) will be needed. Good Luck...........
