Framing closet door on top of existing ceramic tile?

Hi Everyone,

First post on this site, so please bear with me.

I have a front hallway closet which is currently fitted with floor to ceiling doors. The space is about 60" x 96". I will be changing them to regular 48" x 80" doors, but in order to do this I need to build the door frame and header.

My question is can I build the sides of the new door frame on top of existing laid ceramic tile? I only need to build out about 6" from either wall. Eventually, I want to replace the whole floor tile, but not right now.

Or, do I need to go through the process of removing the portion of ceramic tile from each side wall in order to lay down the 2x4 footing for the door frame?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I see no reason why you cannot build on existing flooring, may be a pain when you decide to change the rest of the flooring though. You either do a little more work now, or later.

I see no reason why you would want to. You are going to replace the tiles anyway. Having a wall on top will only make that job more difficult than it will be to cut out the tiles now. Besides, this gives you an excuse to buy that fancy new tool that will help make this job less than an hour project. I see a right-angle grinder or multi-master in your future.
