Framing a carport on a detached garage

I need to get some pitch on what is presently a flat roof carport on a detached garage. Among the challenges i'm facing is how to frame a hip roof on the existing framing...if that can even be done, or should be done.

Is it advisable to run a hip rafter diagonally across ceiling joists? Additionally, if I used the existing ceiling joist structure and did run a hip rafter across them, it would be VERY thin at the outer edge. Can this be accomplished if i put cats in between each of the ceiling joists at an angle that matched the hip rafter to support it?

I doubt this makes any sense..but the overhangs and angles on this roof are going to make putting a hip roof on very difficult.

May just have to bite the bullet and re-frame it as a gable (but of course the city will want it built like the taj mahal !)...which seems like overkill for a carport..AND the back edge of the carport is not square with the garage...it is about a 150 degree angle (the edge of the carport terminates before it reaches the back line of the carport, so it turn at a 150 then back to the back corner of the garage).

Any insight provided would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

Post a photo as well, I, for one, don't understand what you want to do. You want to build a pitched roof over an existing flat roof, correct? Is the existing flat roof connected to another roof? You prefer a hip roof to a gable for what reasons, aesthetic? A hip roof is a deal more complicated to build, though, of course, do-able. Let us know, it sounds like an interesting project.

Have yout ripped roofing and sheeting off?

If it's flat, what kind of roofing is on it now?
