Food-safe dark wood stain

Making some cutting boards for Christmas, trying to give some a dark color, having not much luck with coffee - is there some way to make them darker with food-safe materials?

Food-safe dark wood stain

I am not aware of any food safe stains. The only things that should be on wood where there is food contact, are natural vegatable oils, etc. Others may have something to offer.
