Square up the hole. Glue two wood strips to the inside of the door. When it dries, patch the hole with the same thickness material. Fill any voids with a wood filler. Sand, prime and paint.

For the cost of a "masonite" door slab, if you have the ability to install the hinges and lockset, I'd trash it. If it is a "wood grain" finsh, it will absolutely look like crap when repaired, and if a smooth finish, by the time you try to fill a patch and sand it flush, a coat of paint is most likely going to reveal a "dish" sanded into the soft masonite. If you try the repair, do not sand with a power tool, but use sand paper wrapped around a nice flat piece of wood, and sand with very light pressure and long strokes to prevent digging in a small area.
