fixing hole in a dresser

What is the best way to fix holes left by previous pulls/handles in a dresser. The dresser will be painted when done.
Pardon my ignorance -- unskilled laborer doing wifes wishes

Any wood putty will be fine if you are going to paint.
I may go home hungry, but not tired and hungry.
