finishing around a window opening

i framed in some rooms of a stucco house. this made the distance from the wall to the window deaper. i want to finish this surface with some wood like poplar, but its kind of expensive. is there any other kind of wood suitable for this purpose that is cheaper and wheres a good place to get it? also how do i make the window sill on the bottom? do i just use some 3/4" poplar or something and round the edge off with a router?

As hardwoods go, poplar is very inexpensive. It is the best wood for painted applications in my opinion.

What I think you're talking about is a jamb extension, which extends the window frame to the face of the interior wall. They're typically built with pocket screws and joined to the window frame with biscuits. The window's casing covers part of the edge of the jamb extension for a nice detail. The sill is built from 3/4" poplar as well, and serves as the jamb extension at the bottom.

You really need to pick up a book on trimwork to understand how to do all this. It is too complicated a process to adequately describe online without pictures.

KC got it.
Poplar is the least expensive wood,and best for this purpose. It is the softest of the hardwoods :}:}. Fantastic paint grade lumber,easy working.

Must be the availability (or lack there of) that makes poplar more expensive down here than clear pine or fir even.

That's very common and not hard to do if you dont mind working with corner bead, but still do the stool/sill with either stool stock or like you said, make on from poplar or pine and then add a skirt to the underside.

Drewhart. Truth be said it is easier to do it in wood. by the time you rock it, bead it, 3 coats of spackle and sand I would be sitting on the deck drinkin sweet tea and eatin ribs just watchin ya workin LOL LOL.
Whole deal should cost ya less than 50 bucks in wood to start with. Take some pics. 4 ext jambs, 3 pcs casing, one pc stoll and one pc apron, should take no more than an hr or hr and half.

I have NEVER seen wood stand up to this application for LONG TERM, goof proof solutions. IF I were using wood it would be oak,period,,,BUT,,,if you have vinyl windows, why not continue in with vinyl,pvc extensions so they last and are finished for 'life'. Course I may not live long any more!!
