Area of a triangle
1/2 base x height. Break the roof up into rectangles and triangles and figure the area. Simple as that. You didn't mention the pitch of your roof and if there are any overhangs involved.

figuing sheathing for a hip roof?

Are you doing all 4 sides of the roof or just one? Is the 12 x 20 the footprint of the structure under it?

If the roof overhangs are added to the 12 x 20 then I get 9.625 sheets of area. You need to figure in for scrap. If the actual roof size is 12 x 20 then I would guess you should be good

A hip roof can be done several different ways, not sure how anyone could tell you how much is needed without more info.
It could be as simple as 3, triangles, or a long ridge pole in the middle with angled sides.
