I am looking to get doorway done as shown in the picture.



Is there a way to get a break down of what material I would need for this project?

You will have a tough time building that if you can't even figure out the material.

a friend of mine works at the lumber yard, the carpenter I use buys everything from HD.

That's why I want to get the material myself.

Any help is appreciated

Not sure if anyone helped or not but without knowing the dimensions of the doorway it is hard to give you a material list. My guess. Is that you are going to cut the material yourself. You will need 3/4 mdf unless you want to use birch. The mdf will create your boxes, top cap, center medallion and base molding. Crown molding for the top. Chair rail for the middle trim and base cap or picture molding (can't tell from the picture), to use as the trim price. Be sure all the trim prices match the ones already used in the house. To create the arch pick up a sheet of 1/4" material to bend.

Make a drawing to scale---

Take off the numbers from that---Be sure you get the longest lengths of trim available to avoid waste.

There will be waste---you don't want joint in a long run---

Avoid the temptation to buy exactly what you need----I trimmed a room once where the customer supplied the crown molding----The job was like a puzzle--he had purchased the trim cut for each wall

what a time wasting night mare---I always try to supply the materials so this one irritated me.

get your carpenter to do the material take off. if hes good with trim work it should take him about 5 or 10 minutes to figure out exactly what and how much trim he needs.

one thing to note though, this sort of trim detail is better done by a seasoned finish carpenter, tight joints and correct proportion are key with this sort of thing to be done right. ive seen many columns, and mantels that look like crap because the proportions weren't right

yah, i know that situation mike.. but not via homeowner. through a really really cheap general contractor. we'd be trimming a 2000 sq ft house with a high end trim package.. hed bring enough molding to last me 3 hrs and think it would last 2 days.. along with a 1000 pack of gun nails.. another job were hanging 35 sheets of drywall hed buy a 500 pack of drywall screws

he didnt belive in using an account at the building supply either, i'd have to go buy more material or fasteners then chase him for 3 weeks to get the money back. needless to say i had some words with him and that was the last time i set foot on one of his jobs.. much happier now and i can afford to put gas in my vehicle again

Height is gonna be an issue if I make it arch like on the picture above, so I am thinking of a straight run with a keystone in the middle.

WM47 - 4 5/8" Crown
WM163 - Base Cap 11/16 x 1-3/8
WM956WW - 7/16 x 4 1/4 Backer
WM-300 - 1—1/16 x 3’ Chair Rail
WM-286 - 1-1/16 x 2 Rake

Can't figure out what the top is made out of.

Top is crown with a 3/4" cap - probably 1x5 or 1x4
Like Kirk said, do a rough lineal footage ( not inch-age ) of each piece and round it up to the nearest foot and then add for waste.
These days you can over-order, keep the uncut lengths and return them to the yard for credit.

If you still intend to buy the material for the carpenter, some of the best advice you can hear is not to. Let him get what he needs and what he feels comfortable working with. You getting in the middle of that process is not a good thing.
