Door wont latch

My garage door keeps coming open. I thought the latch was old (it hasn't been replaced in 20 years) so I replaced it. It was still not latching properly..you can't hear a click when you close it. So I replaced the entire door knob and it still won't latch. The new knob can be adjusted to 2 3/4 or 2 3/8 but I measured it as 2 3/4 so I didn't adjust it. Any suggestions??

Going to have to guess you mean the regular door not the over head door.
Close the door just enough to make contact with the latch plate, mark it with a pencil.
Now look to see if it's to high or to low.
Most often it's to low because someone did not use the included 3" screws in the hinges.
The longer screws would have been able to reach the studs behind the casing.

Thanks for advice. I I'll try that I adjust the latch to 2 3/8 and it way to long so that's not the issue. I should mark it what were? In the middle?

At the top and bottom of the latch.
Then see how it lines up with the latch plate.
DO NOT JUST TRY AND MOVE THE LATCH PLATE UP OR DOWN !!

So I removed the latch strike plate before I saw ur response....sorry. The door closes perfectly now so I'm thinking it is an issue with the strike plate. Behind the plate there is another metal plate that makes it seem impossible to adjust the strike plate. So now I'm just lost.

Door wont latch

Go back and reread my post.
There's no need to adjust the latch plate.
There's no need to move the plate.
No need to remove the plate.
When that door was shipped there was a pack of 3" or 2-1/2" screws shipped with it.
There was missing screws in the top hinges and no hole was drilled.
Once the door was installed and plumbed someone was suppose to have drilled pilot holes and installed those long screws.
More often then not there left out or shorter screws where used.
Check the screws, if there loose the door will be off.
If there all 3/4" screws then the door can sag.
Got to tell us is the latch higher or lower then the hole in the latch plate?

Grab some joint compound and smear it over the plate. Close the door ands throw the latch. Open said door and there will be marks showing exactly where everything is hitting. Ron

Pulled the top hinge screws out yet to see if there all short?
Any empty spots where there should have been a screw?
How low is it?
