Door opens by itself...

Hi all. We've got a problem with our bedroom door. It used to squeek really bad, so I shot it with some WD-40. Now the squeeks gone, but the door opens by itself. My wife like to keep the door cracked for the kids, but we have to put something behind it to keep it from opening. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

My best guess would be that the problem is a hinge adjustment. The top hinge is probably not lined up plumb with the bottom hinge. This puts the door on an angle which shifts the top weight and causes it to open. You MAY be able to lossen the hinge screws and tap the hinge a little bit to the opposite direction it is opening.

Pop out one of the hinge-pins, lay it on a hard surface, take a hammer
and give it a couple of light smacks in the middle. What you are
trying to do is barely bend it. Drive it back into the hinge.

If the door is still live, do the same to another one. If that doesn't
fix it it needs serious adjustment.

Apparently the door is not hanging plumb, either due to movement of the structure or the door jamb itself, or it was hung that way originally. The simplest thing is to remove a hinge pin, place it on a hard surface like a concrete driveway, and tap the pin with a hammer a couple of times to bend it slightly. Do this to one, two, or all three pins until you get enough friction to hold the door in position. Usually one pin does the trick.
