Default diy lattice?

I'm about to remake the lattice for my porch.
Any suggestions? I want to keep it relatively thick.
The old stuff was 1/2" thick (full) by 1 3/4" wide, and looked great - except it was covered in peeling lead paint and had to come off to repair the framing.

Was thinking of a few options:

1: get 1/2 X 2 pine, bing bing bing with the nail gun, varnish it.
2: rip 2X4 along the edge - using maybe fir

neither of these really gets me the same dimension as before.

I have a mahogany deck, mahogany stair streads, and will painting my trim white. My shutters are green so maybe I could paint the lattice green, but I think a varnished wood would look nice.

My railings are pretty cool. Maybe I could do a similar design in lieu of lattice down below, using 2X2s?

See railings here: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Tfs6fyy7G4...A-earmuffs.jpg

What do you guys think?

I'd say my budget for this lattice job at the highest end is about $500.

The area to be latticed is appx. 3' high by about 50' long.

Thanks,
B

The last time I made some lattice I had a lot of fun. I have a Lucas mill and keep some pine logs around for special wood that I need.

I cut up some 1 1/2 x 1/2's and put it together. I used glue along with nails just because it was fresh cut lumber and has a tendency to warp and twist. I hit it with some staples at the joints and set the power to drive the staples in below the surface.

Before starting I made a jig so that it would go fast and be consistent.

I sprayed the lattice with neutral sealer before putting it together and then respray it every other year (using a weed sprayer I use for all my natural wood siding). It looks great and I haven't has any problems with it.

My wife and I like the natural look especially after the sun has worked it's magic and it looks like old barn wood.

I really like pine but I don't like the finished pine in the stores. It looks way to "metro" for me. I like it semi rough which is how it comes off the mill.

I am not a fan of clear pine either. I like the knots in the wood.

Here is a picture of some pine I cut for siding. You can see the roughness of it and the blade marks.

It has been sprayed with neutral water sealer and has not turned color at this point but it also faces north so the sun really doesn't hit much.

See if there is a mill close to you that will sell you some rough pine. Some times they will have stuff like that in the bone yard but you might have to rip it to get even sizes. Worth checking out if you have the time and like the idea of rough cut pine.
