diy kitchen cabinet ?
redoing my kitchen. I've a few game plans
1. build from scratch. anyone know got any build plans? I don't need anything fancy, very basic is ok. 2. buy unfinished, paint them myself. what's a good place to shop in SoCal ? I'll probably live in the house for a very long time, so i'm not concern what the next buyer think of me or try to low ball me due to the cab's. thx |

Before: : ![]() After: ![]() I think the doors ran about $8 per in materials. Still got a bunch of work to do in there obviously but this is a start.

1. Google "build cabinets from scratch".
2. I don't know because I don't live there. Hopefully nobody will think less of you because you tried to save a buck. |

OK, how come I got duplicate pics in there? Should I just drag n'drop pics in or use the "manage attachments"? I basically did both as the prevue didn't show them at first.

If your objective is to save money, you might wanna try calling a few cabinet installers and see if you could get a set that's been/being removed. Accumulate a kitchen or two's worth, maybe replace the doors and you'd have new cabinets for very little money. Maybe even volunteer to help with the removal and carry away.
If you really want to build your own, several books from B&D, CH, Taunton, etc. It seems like one or the other handyman/woodworking magazines has an article pretty often, too. |

It's doubtful that you can build them for less than buying them all done----the material costs are high--
There are a lot of cabinet makers here---look in your library for books on building cabinets---

I had a local lumber yard process some 5/8" MDF for me(cut to size, dado, lap, etc).
I expect to have them assembled by mid week. I had some odd dimensions and an odd detail I wanted to incorporate... (I've since changed the design some). I'll post some pics as things go along. --- It was a busy week around here: sump pump trench finished, old stairs cut out, opening expanded, new stringers cut, cabinets blanks primered. |

Building custom cabinetry seems like a very hard task at first, but if you take one step at a time you will be surprised at how quickly it goes. Become familiar with the techniques by reading books on woodworking and cabinet making before jumping in.

If there's one nearby, check out a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. They often have gently used cabinets or even new ones donated by businesses or contractors. The one near us has literally hundreds of cabinets. We recently bought a new, finished 48-inch base cabinet for $70. Even if so inclined, I couldn't build it myself for that little.
