Diagonal Deck Boards

I have an existing deck with joists (2x8's) 16" O.C.
I want to replace my deck boards (5/4 x 6's) and lay them diagonal.
I have heard a lot about needing the joists 12" O.C.
Any advice out there?

Diagonal Deck Boards

5/4 is going to be springy with 16"OC for the framing; because the decking is essentialy now almost 17 inches between supports, as compared to 14 1/2" for the perpendicular run. Besides the extra springyness, the boards tend to create humps and dips betwen the joists when the water/sun starts to work on them.

It is done, but I would suggest temorarily laying a few boards and seeing how they feel to you when you walk on them. You are not going to break the board with normal residential usage, just the "feeling" may be a bit bouncy for you.

Diagonal Deck Boards

With 17" diagonal at 12" on center, it stretches to 22-5/8" at 16" on center........

Be safe, Gary
