Decking wood vs framing wood
I need some boards that's thicker than 1x for bracing. I found this decking wood that's 5/4" thick at Home Depot.

Those my drills and drivers would cut through like knife through butter. This wood decking my drill would take over a minute to drill through with new wood bits. Old bits wouldn't even make a dent. What kind of wood is this? Furthermore, I understand one needs to use pressure treated wood furrings when connecting to concrete block walls. However, if the wall is not perfectly plumb and need to be shimmed a little, why are those shims never pressure treated? Doesn't that defeats the purpose? |

you can get non pressure treated 5/4 stock no problem at a lumber yard, just dont go to a big box.. as for keeping wood out of contact of concrete just use either 8 mil vapor barrier or sil gasket.. regarding the shims.. cedar will still rot if its against a concrete wall that has moisture issues. you can also buy plastic shims at big box stores though you only get 1/5 the amount you would from a bundle of cedar shims at the same cost

needing 5/4 is commonly needed in renos in order to several things.. such as furring out walls.. strapping ceilings where existing pipes are just over 3/4" thick so that extra 1/4 is needed so drywall will clear it when hung.. amoung other things
