deck questions
I have a few questions about the construction of the deck I will be undertaking soon.
1. What type if any adhesive do I need to use between the joist and decking I will be using trex 5/4X6 deck boards?
2. I plan to have a 32" cantaliver on the sides of the deck is this ok? I will be using double 2X10 beams setting on 6X6 post with 2X8 joist laid on top of the beams.
3. I plan to do some built in benches using the trex decking 2X4 and 5/4X6. will this material be strong enough, or do I need to buld the framing for the benches out of lumber?

Congrats on your future undertaking.

1. Adhesives aren't generally used, as fasteners are typically installed on each overlay of the board on top of the joist.

2. For 2', it's generally ok to cantilever, but over that, at lest 4x4's are recommended.

3. Composite decking flexes a great deal as it has little structural rigidity. It is definitely recommend to build the framing for it. If so desired, the framing can be hidden with composite trim.

Yes I will be using a hidden fastner system. I wasn't sure if i should the adhesive also.

will reduce down to a 2' over hang.

Trex is not meant for framing, so you will need a PT wood frame.

I don't know the size of your deck....but generally, we always use a minimum of a 2x10 for joists and 2x12's to fabricate the beam....(most standard sized decks),...
Also 4x6 to 6x6 posts are the industry prefered post sizes....

Make you that your local building dept. approves your plans before you start.
