Cutting Out Built In Shelves

Hi All!
I'm new here so hopefully I haven't missed this answer!
We have a wood burning fireplace with heatolaters in our living. We just moved in in Feb. Around the fireplace are built in shelves. I'm not in love with them but I don't hate them enough to take them all out. There are shelves directly above the fireplace- instead of a mantle essentially, that I do want to partially remove. We want to put our TV above the fireplace. There are nine cubby holes type of thing above the fireplace. I'd like to open the entire space and put in one shelf that spans the top of the fireplace so that the TV can sit on the shelf.
I'm looking for advice on how to cut out the original shelves. Can I use a jigsaw and carefully cut them and then patch the wood? And then how to do I install the shelf at the bottom?

Thanks!

This is what they look like. I want them all gone and then put in a shelf about six inches from mantel to place tv on.

Un-build them---remove the top trim---figure out the order that the parts were installed and disassemble it---no saw needed--

I take it you are talking about a flat screen tv over the fireplace. Check your warranty for the tv, I believe you're going to find it will be voided for this type of installation since the heat from the fireplace affects the electronics. I know, I know you see it done everywhere ...... plus its bad on your neck trying to look up

if you must ...... make sure you put a deep mantel over the fireplace in an attempt to direct the heat away from your tv.

my humble thoughts .....

Good luck!
