Cures For Squeaky Stairs?

The top 5 or 6 steps squeak. It drives me crazy. Any DIY fixes? No access to underneath, just a shallow pantry below.

You said "5 or 6"... which indicates that you do not know for sure if it is 5 or 6. That could mean that your squeak is not necessarily coming from the individual treads. It COULD be the upper attachment of the center stringer (if there is one) or the upper attachment of either side stringer... or anything in between.

No matter where the squeak is, you first need to determine WHERE it is. Use a Listening Tube for this, not just your open ear. Listening Tube? Stick one end of a small rubber tube in your ear, and move the other end around like a doctor with a stethoscope, till you find the exact location/s.

Then, and only then, will you have a fairly accurate idea of what you are working with.

Counting from the top, it's steps 2-5. I do know that I can step on either far edge of the tread and there's no noise, only happens in the middle.

House built in 1985, if that helps.

One thing could be positive in this. The squeaks may serve as a warning if a burgler is trying to sneak up your stairs one night.

Good thinking, way to look at a liability as an asset

You need to have access from behind the stairs to correct the problem. You can buy small steel Simpson Angle cleats at a box store and screw a few of these between the riser and the treads. This should help. Using steel brackets or angle iron will positively limit the penetration, unlike wood. Use HWH self tapping (Not self Drilling) screws. If the treads and risers are oak or maple, pilot drill with a depth stop. (Collet) and put some wax on the screw threads.
