Crown nailer strip?

I am puting up some crown moulding in my family room and I need to put up a nailer strip on two of the walls. What have you guys found that works best for this? Also, if you are installing paint grade trim do you usually cope the inside corners, or do you miter and use painters caulk if necessary?

I'm not sure that I follow you? Do you mean a nailing 'cleat'?

It depends on your 'coping' abilties. Coping the cut always is the best method. If you find this is just too difficult for you, then go a head and miter cut and use caulking....

Yes, I need a cleat. On two of the walls the floor joists will run parallel to the crown so I need something to nail to correct? I was told you could rip a 2x4 at the appropriate angle and screw it to the studs which will gime me alot more meat to nail to. I was wondering if there was something easier to use? What do you suggest?

I agree, coping is the way to go. I planned on coping the inside corneres so it would turn out a little nicer, and to give me practice. I was just curious what people normally do.

You could also use 1x pine stock. It will be easier to 'rip down' due to it having less thickness. You could also layer it, if you wanted more area to nail to.... The only issue with using pine is that it is not very straight. (You could spend a little more and use a 1x Poplar stock. much straighter...)
