I'm in a 60 year old row home. The steps from the first floor to the basement squeak loudly. what can be done to silence them or lessen the sound/movement? Structurally there is no problem, just irritating on us because of the noise.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Harry
Find the squeak. Then either nail the section down, screw the section down or if it is near the stair stringer then glue it down. You could also insert a small piece of wood shim to take up the space. The reason the the stair squeaks is because the wood has movement and is rubbing against another piece of wood or other object. If you can stop the wood from moving then the squeak should diminish.
